Memorizing Scripture as a Fam

Our family started something new this summer for our family devotional time that I thought I would share. We chose the following sections of the bible to read everyday together:
Morning: Ps 16, 23, 46, 47, 127, 145, Matt 6:25-34
Evening: Phil 2:3-16, Rom 1 & 2

Each time of reading takes roughly 20 minutes. We have done this every day for about 3 months now. Amazingly, after about 6 weeks we realized that we had several of these chapters memorized. Now, Caleb (3 1/2), Grace (2 1/2), Amy and me can each recite Ps 16, 23, 46, 47 & 127 completely and can do the rest of the chapters with a few helps. It has been so encouraging to get the word into our hearts, dwelling in us richly, and to see the way it is affecting each of our lives and our thinking. It has also been great to have these chapters memorized for times when we are in the car or can't hold a Bible (mowing the lawn, doing dishes, etc...).

We have moved on from all the Psalms except 145 and are going to add some new chapters. We will probably keep going on the other NT chapters for another couple of weeks until we have them down really well and then add some new chapters. It has been amazing to see that we could probably memorize 30-40 chapters of the Bible a year with this approach if we stay consistent!!! Pretty exciting.

Mark and Amy, thanks so much for sharing this! We're super challenged, and may steal your idea!

This is encouraging because it seems so doable- through repetition.

Could you guys email me your new address? whitepages.com had it last week, but it has your old one this week.
